Construction of a coastal protection and settling wetlands (Tarragona)
Water control programme for the waters from the Ebro Delta Feeding the bays with fresh water from the irrigation canals. 1st stage
Scope of action: Cuenca Hidrográfica del Ebro
Total investments: 19,200,000 €
There are two types of water infrastructure in the Ebro Delta, irrigation channels, which supply the crop fields, and the network of drains, which collect the water from the fields and carry the run-off during rainfall. When the water level in the drainage ditches is below the sea level, it is pumped to the bays, arriving laden with sludge, nutrients, plant components and other contaminants, resulting in a deterioration of the ecological status of the bays . The action involves the creation of two settling wetlands located in the right and left bank of the river Ebro, to improve the quality of water from the fields prior to discharge into the bays.
